What Is a Postpartum Doula?

Family Focused

In the book Mothering the New Mother, a doula is described as "one who nurtures the new mother by performing those tasks that comfort her and free her to be with her baby. She is nonjudgmental, intuitive, and experienced."

I am there to mainly support the mom, and in doing so, support the whole family. This can look like:

  • Providing community resources

  • Prioritizing rest and healing

  • Preparing nutritious meals and snacks

  • Light housekeeping

  • Offering a listening ear

  • Helping process the birth

  • Recognizing postpartum mood disorders

  • Helping care for older siblings

  • Establishing baby feedings (whether breastfeeding or formula feeding)

  • Helping you to trust your instincts as parents

  • Teaching newborn and postpartum care

  • Picking up groceries

  • Helping you set up a postpartum plan

  • Supporting you in the decisions you make for your child

  • Gently advocating your needs to others when desired

  • Guiding you during this adjustment period and initiating a smoother start to your relationship with your baby

A postpartum doula does NOT:

  • Diagnose any medical conditions or give medical advice

  • Make decisions for you

  • Perform heavy house cleaning or organizing

  • Transport clients or other family members

  • Take over complete care of the baby
